vegan explosion: the diablo dog

as a child, i always had an aversion to the taste of hot dogs. and a kids in the hall skit confirmed my distaste when they claimed that hot dogs were composed of yucky animal parts, mixed with old phone books and wieeeeener flavour. (i still firmly believe this is the original recipe for hot dogs). and truth be told, i've never liked the vegan hot dogs all that much either. then behold, the diablo dog. ms. jewbacca and ms. crunk both had me intrigued, then salivating, and then running to the store. i snatched up the jumbo dogs and some seriously awesome vegan hoagie buns. i kid you not, this is a little (er, huge) piece of sinful heaven.

my diablo dog consisted of:
  • huge hoagie buns
  • jumbo vegan hot dogs
  • jalapenos
  • chopped tomatoes
  • regular mustard
  • hot scottish mustard
  • chopped pickles
  • chopped green peppers
  • vegan queso
  • chili beans
  • hot sauce
  • ketchup
  • sauerkraut
first get your prep out of the way, because when those dogs are done, you aren't going to want to be cutting tomatoes and pickles.

split the hot dogs down the center and pop them on the grill (about medium heat). then split the hoagies and grill them for a minute or two as well so they are nice and crunchy. pile all the fixins on, smush everything together and do your best to get it in your mouth.

definitely a three or four napkin dish.

I am a big hotdog fan. I wish for the day I can walk out of my house and buy a vegan dog from a street vendor. The supermarket here only brings in 5 packs of smart dogs and I think we buy all 5 of them in a matter of 4 weeks. This is great way to enjoy a hotdog full of condiments and a whole bunch of veggies

That looks absolutely amazing! I was never a big fan of meat hot dogs either (probably because the only one I ever ate gave me food poisoning!). I am however a HUGE fan of vegan hot dogs!!

And while I can't eat the actual hot dog part of it, I sure can steal your idea's for toppings! Yum!!

The more napkins the better...and having a little bit on your shirt is a sign of a REALLY good diablo dog! That looks amazing, you've got so many of my favorite things piled onto one plate.

Old phone books? Well, now THATS why I can replicate hotdogs when I make them. Thanks for that!

Ever notice how Diablo anything just makes it more of a tough guy? It's like hey whatcha eating... oh I have a Diablo something, I win :)

that sounds like the most awesome way to eat a hot dog, ever. unfortunately for me...i really hate smart dogs. they quit selling my favorite kind (yves brand) here! i've been hot dog-less for months. sigh. perhaps the weird flavor of the smart dogs are completely obliterated with this incredible concoction of toppings...must try!

allularpunk - i know what you mean. i still don't like the hot dogs all that much. the best part of the diablo dog was that i didn't really taste it... or what i did taste was so covered in condiments, i didn't mind it!

I've never had a Smart Dog. Your diablo dog looks 100% delicious! And just the thought of vegan queso smothered on is making me hungry!

I do admit to liking vegan hot dogs. I like the condiments best anyway, and your diablo dog looks fab! I'll have to try it out.

Aren't these the best?! I loved them and can't wait to make 'em again! I didn't use sauerkraut, but I bet that would be a great addition next time.
